What Does The Phrase “Health Conscious” Really Mean?

I have used the phrase “Health Conscious” often, in past few years, to describe myself. I have also used it to characterize a life style of eating on the healthy side, and living with healthy habits. Today I was thinking more deeply about the phrase Health Conscious and what it really means.

The word Conscious is another word for saying Aware. OK, so that’s a simple interpretation of the word Conscious. We can get much deeper into what conscious and consciousness means. But for now let’s accept that notion awareness is that which is implied in the phrase Health Conscious.

Now, the other part of the phrase, the word Health, what does that really mean? And what does awareness of Health really mean?

I think most of us interpret Health as a concept that describes our body. Oxford dictionary defines Health to mean ” the state of being free from illness or injury” Probably most people in our western modern culture perceive Health to be what Oxford dictionary defined it to be, lack of disease. But in the context of the phrase Health Conscious, it doesn’t quite feel right to say Health Conscious means being aware of lack of disease. I think Health Conscious has a more proactive sense towards Health. Meaning, instead of being aware of lack of disease, Health Conscious lifestyle refers to an awareness of making choices in our life in favor of the maintaining or even promoting our state of being healthy. I think I’m comfortable with that meaning of the phrase Health Conscious. How about you?

But being a deep thinker I kept going with my desire to really dig into what I mean by calling myself Health Conscious. What was challenging to me about using this phrase is how do we define Healthy? What do we mean by being Healthy? How do we know our body or mind is enjoying a state of Health? Simply by not feeling sick, does that mean our body is in pure state of Health? And if we want to find out the answer, how do even being to know what’s going on with the inner state of our body?

In our modern culture in the west, there is way to answer that question. And that way is to visit a Medical Doctor, an MD. We have all been conditioned, and our parents have been conditioned, and perhaps even our grand parents generation have been conditioned, to accept that we human beings, ourselves, can know and sense very little about the state of health of our body. That in order to know how healthy our body is, we have to visit the doctor and have him perform tests and use the science of medicine to discover the state of health of our body. Don’t you agree?

The idea that we ourselves can know, or learn to know, our body’s state of health is relatively a foreign idea in our culture. We not only have learned to not pay attention to our body and our body’s state of health, we have been conditioned to ignore it even if we intuitively or subconsciously can sense what’s going on inside our body. In the modern industrial world we live in now, we have learned to delegate to the doctors and medical science and systems, the authority and responsibility of sensing the state of health of our body and mind. We have delegated the authority and responsibility of knowing and sensing what is healthy and what is not, what food is healthy and what is not, what environment is healthy and what is not, all of that we have delegated to others, namely to popular culture and indirectly to industry. Industry has found the way to shape the popular culture. McDonald has found a way to become popular. Coke and Pepsi have found the system to become popular. Fruits and vegetables that have been factory farmed with toxic chemicals and pesticides, have become mass produced by industry and has dominated the market for decades. Same goes with the other types of food like meat and fish, industrialized and factory farmed now for the most part.

How can we claim to be Health Conscious or aware of the state of the health of our body, state of the health of our food and environment, when from day 1 when we come to this world, we have been taught not to be conscious or aware of our health and let others take care of all that. And when our body’s health deteriorates to the point when we are literally sick and not functional, we believe that the doctors and medical science can diagnose and cure our body with tests and medicine.

The fact is we are born into the world fully “Health Conscious”. The wisdom of life is encoded in our soul, so to speak. Yet sadly by the time we are adults, most of us have been taught to dismantle our awareness of our body’s health, awareness of what food is healthy, and our awareness of what is healthy or not in our environment.

Therefore how can I call myself Health Conscious? Where do I begin to regain my wisdom about health of my body and my mind? My body doesn’t need to become sick before I decide to pay attention to it. My awareness of my health is something I can get back slowly but surely. We can make choices everyday that impacts the health of our body and mind. Most of those choices are made for us if we don’t make them. Industry and culture has been making those choices for us, and for certain the health and well-being of our body is not what industry has in mind. I know for me I started a few years ago the journey to become “Health Conscious”. I now know we can take back the responsibility and authority of our own health. I became vegetarian a few years ago. I mediate more often. I buy organic. But there’s so much more wisdom I can become aware of in my path to becoming Health Conscious.

I recently discovered Ayurveda (pronounces Ahh Your Veda). Ayurveda means Science (or better put, Wisdom) of Life. It is the ancient tradition of health and medicine that comes from that part of the world which is now India. Tradition of Ayurveda goes back 5000 years. Dr. Deepak Chopra of Chopra Center for Wellbeing is a great source of Ayurveda knowledge. One thing I learned is that Ayurveda says that concept of health, healing and being whole is all the same. That, health is really about being whole and integrated in body, mind and spirit. I’m so excited to learn more about Ayurveda. Its my next step towards becoming Health Conscious!! What is your next step?

Instances of Fractal Evolution

Instances of Fractal Evolution

When couple of years ago (Nov 2006) I experienced author and biologist Dr. Bruce Lipton‘s 2-day presentation in his seminar produced by Spirit 2000 in San Francisco, I was totally blown away by the depth of insight I got into how my biology, my health, and how my health at the cellular level, is in my complete control through my beliefs (both conscious and subconscious). But one new thing Bruce added at the end of his presentation was his talk about how patterns of life and evolution are similar to patterns of fractal geometry. Dr. Lipton who has done decades of research on cellular biology, talks about this in detail in the article called Fractal Evolution he wrote and published on his site.

Fractal Geometry

Fractal ImageFractal geometry is derived by a recursive mathematical formulas, and incredible shapes were produced when computers were strong and fast enough to be able to execute these very computing-intensive formulas. This picture is an example of a fractal. What can be visibly seen if you click and download this very large high resolution image file, is that the patterns of the whole are repeated in the parts.

Concept of Fractal Evolution is that evolution follows a similar pattern, meaning “pattern of the whole is seen in the parts of the whole” quoting from Dr. Lipton’s article. For example cells of our body have same systems as our body as a whole (digestive system, reproduction system, etc. ). Or the “Humans are a fractal image of society, cells are a fractal image of the human”. Here in this post, I will not elaborate further about this concept and refer you to read that article for the enlightening details. But what I say here in the rest of this article, is about a few of the fascinating real instances of Fractal Evolution I’ve come to notice.

Digital Technology and Unified Field Theory

Dr. John Hagelin is one of the authorities in Unified Field Theory. One of his recent speeches that includedEinstein and Unified Field Theory information about Unified Field Theory was nicely captured in this article. To quote from the article: “theory locates a single, universal, unified field of nature’s intelligence at the basis of all forms and phenomena of the universe”. This reminds me of an aspect of quantum field theory called Zero-point field, the “lowest quantized energy level of a quantum mechanical system”.

Essentially what that means to me is that at the lowest level of physical reality, we and everything in the universe, all are made up of the same thing. Take our physical body for example. It is made up of organs, organs made up of live cells, our cells are made up of organic molecules, which in turn are made of atoms. Atoms are made of vacuum space, with very small particles mixed in, namely protons and electrons that move at speed of light. We can keep going and break down what these particles are made of, but at the end of the day, we arrive at the Zero-point energy field. Our body, at the deepest level of its physical existence, is pure information and energy.

Now take the Digital information technology that is now fully integrated into our lifestyles. Our cell phones, computers, Internet, digital TVs, PDAs, emails, Web sites, blogs, CDs, DVDs, on and on and on. Basically the entire human experience is now almost fully integrated with Digital technology, and continues to be, as more and more layers of complexity evolves one after another, all built upon Digital Technology. And if you take this digital world and zoom in deep, you’ll find at the core, it is made up of one single state of existence, which is a one bit of information that can only be either value 1 or 0. Essentially this very complex world of digital devices and system we have come to use and depend on for our daily lifestyle, is made up of most basic unit of information namely 1s and 0s.

For example take this blog you’re reading. Its a Web site, made out of HTML pages, made out of text, text is made out of ASCII codes, and ASCII codes are made of byes of information stored in memory or hard drive of some server, each byte of data has 8 bits, and each bit of stored information can hold a value of either 0 or 1. Another example is your digital LCD TV screen; The screen is shows a digital image made of single pixels, each pixel shows one of millions of possible colors, that color is coded by a number, that code stored in memory as bytes which in turn is made of bits of 0s and 1s.

The bit is the smallest unit of the information and energy in the digital world. Every level of digital information regardless of how complex it is (for example all the information you have in your iPhone or iPod), can shown to be a massive collection of simple bits organized in a particular way to create that higher level of digital information meaningful to the end user.

The pattern of evolution of the digital world matches the pattern of evolution the physical world, down to their very core level, a bit and Zero-point quantum field.

Evolution of the Web

Another instance of Fractal Evolution at work is the evolution pattern of the World Wide Web. Meaning the way evolution of the Web and Internet (in term of how it is integrated into the life of humanity) models after pattern of other much more advanced evolutions, such as evolution of human body.

Anatomy of a CellThe human body is comprised of 70 trillion to 100 trillion live cells. These many cells work together in harmony. Trillions of cells, all alive with their own scale of consciousness, cooperate and communicate in a community and with unimaginable synchronicity. As Dr. Deepak Chopra writes in his book Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desires in every moment of our life, there are literally millions of simultaneous synchronous functions performed by the body via its organs and cells. Our body is complex system with thousands of subsystems that are processing about 4 billion bits of information per second. This scale of instantaneous communication by the cells of our body is unfathomable and unimaginable. Chopra describes how this is a good example of existence of a “non-local” field of intelligence. This field does not have a time or space dimension. This field contains information and intelligence everywhere all the time and at the same time. Consciousness of the cells are from this non-local field of information. That is how such scale of cooperation and synchronization between 100 trillion living community cells can even be possible.

Early in evolution of life on Earth, living organisms were single-cell organisms. It took a while before cells got together to create multi-cell organism life . Then fast forward millions of years of growth and learning, and we now have trillions of cells living together in a community we call a human body. These cells have immense intelligence and knowledge of what to do and how to live together. Its an amazing system. Yet, through millions of years of evolution, cells figured out and learned how to come together and communicate to create something much grander than before. Basically now each one of our cells is part of a massive network of cells that form the body, with simultaneous synchronous connection and communication between many levels and layers of subsystems within our body.

Looking at how the Web is evolving, we can see a similar pattern of growth. Less than 20 years ago the technology of the Web was starting to function across the Internet network infrastructure. Servers would connect to the net and host Web sites of very simple and static content. As HTML gained more functionality, Web pages could have many options of formating, linking and presenting information, and the Web pages attracted more content and information. While the number of Website on the internet grew, the content and sophistication of those sites grew to a higher more usable level.

Similar to how life evolved with single cell live organisms growing in numbers and populating the Earth, the cyberspace grew by thousands and thousands of new static Web sites coming online over the course of the 1990s and early years of this century. Through B2B and B2C technology infrastructure coming to life, the Web sites started to connect with each other and become very functional in helping businesses and people grow their effectiveness in life.

Web 2.0 and Fractal Evolution Model of The WebNow that we are in the age of Web 2.0, we see a whole new layer of functionality has come to fruition on the Web. Now we have social networking on the Web. We have instantaneous access to information on the Web sites through Google’s powerful indexing and search capability. We have Wikipedia, BitTorrent, Flickr, blogging, tagging, participation, and many other features and functions that have evolved on the Web. The Web is no longer a large pool of static Web sites. The Web now has a life of its own and the original landscape of millions of Web sites in early incarnation of the Web, is now evolving into blogs and dynamic content that are linked together in infinite ways, to share information and create relevance and give significance to this massive amount of content.

Essentially, large communities are forming on the Web that have values and interests in common. These communities could be forming around sports, politics, health, society, on and on and on. These communities function like the multi-cell organisms that evolved on the planet, separately on their own and anthropologically specialize and grow more sophisticated in their functionality, seemingly randomly. Are we active participants in Earth\'s Evolution?

Just as Web is evolving from a single Website/content platform to a blog infrastructure platform, life evolved from a single cell platform to a multi-cell platform. Life has come a long way and now we have a 100 trillion cells form all types of organs and life systems working in the miraculous wonder of human body. Fractal Evolution can tell us we have a lots great discoveries to look forward to as the Web evolves further. The evolution of the Web in fact is a pattern within a pattern, a smaller pattern within the bigger pattern of human evolution. Human evolution seems it has a long ways to go in realm of human consciousness and thought. I think with help of the Web, human evolution can accelerate towards the era when billions of single cells we call a human mind, can come together and work in exquisite harmony to create another miraculous wonder, a highly evolved and illuminated planet Earth!!

Heavenly Skiing, not at Heavenly

Picture taken from 6th floor hotel room in South TahoeLast week spent 5 days at South Lake Tahoe. Arrived mid day Tuesday at Sierra-At-Tahoe ski resort. There were 330 lift tickets sold for that entire resort that day, according to their office whom I called on the way. We skied for about 3 hours non stop, seeing maybe 5 to 10 people while skiing down each long run. Sunshine was beautiful and warm. The whole experience was heavenly, and we were far from Heavenly resort.

We repeated that experience Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday before driving back home. This was the first time in a more than 10 years that I skied 5 days in a row. Still using my old Solomon 9/X expert skis from more than 13 years ago.

When we got back home, I just wanted to be back at Tahoe as soon as I could. It was like the old days for me when because of the love of skiing I would ski 10 to 20 days a year. That old flame I had for skiing was reignited by this new trip.

I decided to find out if I can get an affordable new pair of skis and leave behind the 20th century ski technology I’ve been using. I shopped online and quickly found Evogear site come up on my searches for ski stuff. I found there a good brand variety of 2007 and 2008 skis at huge discounts. I couldn’t believe the discounted prices. Problem was the size selection was very thin. My current skis are size 190 cm. For new “shape” skis I felt mid 160’s cm will be ideal for me. I found a brand new 2007 Rossignol Bandit B2 expert skis in size 166 for $249 on the site, discounted from $730 retail price. After thinking about it for a day or so, I pulled the trigger and bought it online, along with a great binding set, free shipping, no tax. I spent $359 for an outfit that retails over a $grand$.

Boxes (ski and bindings) arrived 2 days later. Was shipped from Washington state down to my place in California. I drove it to Any Mountain shop close by, for a tech to mount the bindings for $30. I’ll pick it up tomorrow and if I help it, I’ll be back on the mountain (Northstar this time) for another heavenly skiing experience, this time with my new skis. Not much time left this season before the good hours of skiing in the ski day shrinks to the early morning hours due to the warmth of the sun.

Oh I forgot to mention, last week I bought the next year’s season pass which included all the spring skiing left to do this year. So essentially I’ll be skiing free rest of this season using my new next year’s season pass.

I am real excited, can you tell?

See you on the mountain.
